Torben Brown is a Yellowknife born guitarist, singer and songwriter with an extensive performance background in country, rock, blues, jazz and world music. His new band’s distinct sound is roots based, drawing on jazz, proto-rock, old time twang and country-noir. The songs are infectious, tightly composed and thoughtful, straddling a wide range of Americana styles without settling on any one in particular. Dig the Hole, License to Steal and Get Away with Murder borrow stylistically from the likes of Steve Earle, Neil Young and Tom Waits while songs Dark Star and Higher than the Satellites show a more modern jazz-rock influence. Sugarfly, a folksy ballad about beekeeping, shows off some impressive fingerstyle guitar over an astounding set of changes. At the core of this diverse sound is the big heart of the music - the rhythm section. Though a very adept guitarist himself, Torben makes no secret of putting the rhythm section first, downplaying guitar indulgences in favor of space, groove, and feeling.
